It was announced today that national unemployment is the highest its been in 27 years. Job growth always lags as the economy recovers. Many experts are saying that many of the jobs lost will never be available again. Some have even coined the term "Jobless Recovery!" As in any situation, there are advantages and disadvantages to starting a business at any given point in time. Here is how I see it. This is a good time for learning and preparation for starting a business after the first of the year. The advantages are: lease rates for space are down, interest rates are lower, there are people looking for employment, franchisors are going the extra mile to assist new franchises in getting started and the economy is growing. The primary disadvantage is, loans are still more difficult to obtain. If you can obtain one, SBA loans have better interest rates and are less expense to obtain than they use to be. As with any significant investment, planning and research is important. There are franchises that do well in any economy. I am always in favor of franchises that have low overhead.
